At 35, I Still Eat Cake For Breakfast

At 35, I Still Eat Cake For Breakfast

Pairs Well With…”Act as young as you feel.  You’re not getting older, you’re getting more entitled to be your fabulous self.” – Gwen Stefani

I love birthdays. If I have to get specific, my birthday. Growing up, we had a tradition in my house that you got to eat cake for breakfast on your birthday.  At 35, I still eat cake for breakfast.

Cake for Carin's Birthday

Today is my birthday, a birthday that I’ve not so positively anticipated over the last few years. I have fallen short of society’s expectations of me to have a husband and pop out a few kids. At times, I’ve felt anxious, stressed, judged and sometimes even flawed because I haven’t met what American culture deems as successful for a mid-thirties woman. And by successful, I specifically mean the marriage and kids bit.

Despite a booming career, deep social circles and a worldly background, much of what people seem to fixate on is why, “at my age” with “all I’ve got going on for me,” I am unmarried and without children. It’s hard for me to believe that people may be so narrow-minded that they think there’s only one path to happiness. But you know what they say, you can’t fix stupid.

Pairs Well With…”All great changes are preceded by chaos.” – Deepak Chopra

Whoever told me doing a website transfer and updates on my own would be easy should hide now. Run fast. I’m coming to get you. Five-second head start.

Pairs Well With… just celebrated its first anniversary…

…and I felt it was time to unleash more creative freedom by taking on a self-hosted website.  (Word to the wise: you better know what the hell you’re doing before you take this on.)  I’ve published every Tuesday for 52 weeks and wasn’t going to let this week be the exception.  However, I certainly couldn’t publish to a site that collapsed on itself.

Dear Future Self…

Dear Future Self…

Pairs Well With… “Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything.  Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.” – Unknown

Dear Future Self,

Hey Firecracker, how’s it going?  I know we haven’t been properly introduced, and I’m sure we’ll cross paths at some point, but now is a good time for me to say hello.

I’ve been thinking about you and life and wanted to reach out.  The thing about life is, you never know where it’s going to take you, who you’ll meet and where you’ll be in the next phase of it – but I think you know all this already.  I can only imagine what you’re going to be like.  If you’re anything like me today, you work so hard, you love so hard, you dance your way through life so seamlessly. You’re Unstoppable.  It’s impossible not to see endless possibilities lying ahead waiting for you.  I anticipate you’re probably still vibrant, vivacious, clever and curious.  Don’t quit those things.  You probably still tell really bad jokes.  Now might be a good time to curb those.

What Do You Want To Be Known For?

What Do You Want To Be Known For?

Pairs Well With…”Chase It” by Ashley Dubose, a Minneapolis favorite (LOVE this song!)

In a hallway conversation with my colleague last week, he asked how I liked my new job, and how my blog was coming along, mentioning that he thoroughly likes and is touched by my writing.  I told him I was working to find a balance for both, in order to be 100% focused on each.

My colleague shared a story with me about someone he once worked with who worked her 9-5 by day, and baked cookies at night, something that was evolving into quite the side business. As her cookie business continued to grow, her boss pulled her aside and asked her what she wanted to be known for.  My guess was a mean chocolate chip cookie.

My colleague looked me in the eyes and said, “So…what do YOU want to be known for?” and walked away.
