Dear 2018 Self…

Pairs Well With… “Relax and trust the timing of your life.  You will figure out your career. You will find the right relationship. You will become the person you always wanted to be. Just don’t forget to appreciate who you are now.” -Unknown

Dear 2018 Self,

You’ve most certainly become a citizen of the world now, haven’t you?!  You’ve got more passport stamps than Carmen San Diego.  I can’t even keep up with you and your whereabouts these days. But you know what?  Regardless of what country or state you land in, if you come back at all, you’ll have achieved a new level of happiness and contentment in your heart.  The happiness you’ve achieved over the last year will continue to blossom for you next year as well.  I have a feeling there are a few tricks up your sleeve yet. You’ll have figured out how to fully live on your own terms and love it.

Last year when I wrote this type of letter to you, I never anticipated that you’d be already out killin’ it in the way you are today. That you would be sitting on the bright blue and breezy beaches of Greece feeling the small heartbeat of a soon to be flourishing business -and you still have another four months of travel awaiting you.

Towards the end of last year, you wanted to travel the world, see things and gravitate to something on your own, without being pushed.  All you ever wanted was to be free, but you didn’t know how or where to start.  Being the impatient person you still are (and always will be), you just started pulling every plug you could find, not so much in an effort to start over, but let’s be honest, not everything going on in your life was working for you now, was it?  You saw that, even when you didn’t want to recognize it.

Some looked at you and said that you weren’t committing to anything in your life.  (Newsflash: you still don’t give any damns today about what these people think, even less so now, and you’re still living your life for you, not them.  In fact, you’re standing on the shore and waving.  Literally.)  But on the contrary, what they didn’t know is how strongly you committed to ridding your life of things that didn’t serve you – and getting it right.  This time, these moves you made….you got it right.  You let the back half of last year’s experiences break you so that you could rebuild this year in a way that makes sense for you today. I love that you let yourself embrace these experiences and be vulnerable to it all, even when it hurt.

I’m proud of you for following your heart in what you needed to do, even as hard and scary as it was at times. You always have been and always will be a brave and strong lady, two words you don’t use often enough to describe yourself.  But they’re true, and I give you kudos for jumping into a freefall to see what you are capable of without chains, boundaries or confinement – or a parachute.

SPOILER ALERT: You’re never going to be the same.

Your heart is going to be filled with a year’s worth of endless memories that one can only hope to experience in a lifetime. Your mind is going to be so expanded that if all you have lying right in front of you at the end of this trip is opportunity and ideas, well, that’s more than anyone could ask for. Let your mind continue to guide the way, but let your heart have a say. Allow your spirit to groove with each experience and continue to take it all in.  For the most part, you’ve learned to live in the moment. Bask in the joy of it all.

You’ll continue to get sharper and sharper in your intentions, with who you let into your life and what makes you feel alive.  You have a north star.  Keep following it. It’s the right path, trust me, I feel it. You’ve now gotten a small peek into what it means to live differently: living with a lot fewer materials things, stability and money.  Let this lifestyle continue to humble you and help keep things in perspective.  Something tells me there are a few hidden gems waiting for you yet on your world tour. Your life is about to hit a crescendo, explode in the best way possible, and everything is about to fall into place.  There will be a moment that presents itself that will make parts of your past clear. The show’s not over yet. Anything can still happen.

Reach for the stars, swing from them to get where you’re going, but don’t give up. You’re too capable to quit, even when you think you’re not.  You’ve already made it this far.  Remember when you had some of your most fearful moments wondering if this was all going to be worth it in the end?

So, here you are on the beautiful beaches of Greece. Well, is it?

Sincerely,

Miss Present Day Self
